Col Have the longest Recorded Positive Superhumps ?
نویسنده
چکیده
Re-examination of extensive photometric data of TV Col reveals evidence for a permanent positive superhump. Its period (6.4 h) is 16 percent longer than the orbital period and obeys the well known relation between superhump period excess and binary period. At 5.5h, TV Col has an orbital period longer than any known superhumping cataclysmic variable and, therefore, a mass ratio which might be outside the range at which superhumps can occur according to the current theory. We suggest several solutions for this problem.

A 6 . 3 - h superhump in the cataclysmic variable TV Columbae : the longest yet seen
We present results from a two week multi-longitude photometric campaign on TV Col held in 2001 January. The data confirm the presence of a permanent positive superhump found in re-examination of extensive archive photometric data of TV Col. The 6.3-h period is 15 per cent longer than the orbital period and obeys the well known relation between superhump period excess and binary period. At 5.5-h...
متن کاملEvidence for Large Superhumps in Tx Col and V4742 Sgr
Since the discovery of the largest positive superhump period in TV Col (6.4 h), we have started a program to search for superhumps in cataclysmic variables (CVs) with large orbital periods. In this work, we summarize preliminary results of our observations of TX Col and V4742 Sgr. TX Col is an intermediate polar with a 5.7-h orbital period. V4742 Sgr is a recent (2002) nova with no known period...

We consider a mechanism for the formation of superhumps in the TV Col system, based on the possible existence of a precessional spiral wave in the accretion disk of the system. This mechanism can act in binaries with arbitrary component-mass ratios, and our precessional spiral wave model can be applied to explain observed superhumps of all types.
متن کاملFloquet analysis of disk instabilities and superhumps in Cataclysmic Variables
We analyze the dynamical stability of hydrodynamical flows in the equatorial plane of a thin axisymmetric accretion disk in close binary systems. The periodic tidal forces of the companion star induce parametric instabilities, which are characterized by the Floquet exponent. We propose that the onset of superhumps can be understood in this context. Comparing our model with well-known systems le...
متن کاملCurious Variables Experiment (CURVE): SDSS J210014.12+004446.0 - dwarf nova with negative and positive superhumps
We report the results of 67 hours of CCD photometry of the recently discovered dwarf nova SDSS J210014.12+004446.0 (SDSS J2100). The data were obtained on 24 nights spanning a month. During this time we observed four ordinary outbursts lasting about 2-3 days and reaching an amplitude of ∼1.7 mag. On all nights our light curve revealed persistent modulation with the stable period of 0.081088(3) ...
